Urban Borders

Urban Borders – exhibition opening

It is probably impossible to capture the relationship between the city dweller and the urban space by means of concepts, in all its complexity. What does heterotopia (Michel Foucault) really mean, what is a “non-place,” a private, a communal, or a public space? The recent years have seen the emergence of a modern use of space, while the classic social function of public spaces seems to disappear. Can culture and its institutions facilitate an understanding of this complex relationship?
Urban Borders considers the city a diverse fabric whose territory and composition keeps changing, and through which run dividing lines both abstract and very tangible. The same lines that divide may also connect.
The installations of Urban Borders are attempts at making physical interventions into the urban space. They try to render the visible and invisible boundaries that run through the city through the means of contemporary art.

The installation is on view between 17 October and 3 November.
