Love and Death in Józsefváros

The team of Hosszúlépés. Járunk? has offered planned city walks for seven years, revealing the secrets of Budapest along different themes. Their walking theatre presents literary works and the characteristic urban spaces that serve as their scenes. We can now visit emblematic locations in Józsefváros, places that were featured – often played the main role – in the short stories or novels of Frigyes Karinthy, Géza Bereményi, Gyula Krúdy and János Térey. Amidst the living scenery of Teleki Square Market, Rákóczi Square, Nagyfuvaros Street and Mátyás Square, Eszter Kiss, actress of Katona József Theatre, will introduce her ambling audience to the secret life of Józsefváros. “A strange part,” Karinthy wrote of Teleki Square. “It’s a separate enchanted city within the city, with its own language, customs and laws.”
